What this site is

DMV Fee Lookup is a set of free calculators that estimate what it costs to register a vehicle, and how much sales tax is due when you buy one, in each of the 50 states and Washington DC.

It is an independent site run by one person. It is not affiliated with any state DMV, motor vehicle agency, or government office. "DMV" in the name describes the subject, not who runs it.

How the numbers are checked

Every figure comes from an official source: a state fee schedule, a department of revenue publication, or the statute itself. Each page links to that source.
Where an agency publishes its own worked example, the calculator is tested against it and must reproduce it exactly. For example, the Tennessee page matches the Department of Revenue's dealer manual example to the cent.
One-time charges (such as a first-time registration fee or a title fee) are listed separately and are not mixed into the yearly total, because that is the most common reason published estimates are wrong.
Every page shows the date it was last checked against its source. Most states change their fees once a year, usually in January or July, and pages are re-checked on that schedule.

Limits

The results are estimates. Your state or county office issues the final bill, and some counties and cities add local charges that are not shown. Nothing here is legal or tax advice.

How the site is paid for

The calculators are free and need no account. The site may show advertising from Google AdSense to cover its costs. Advertisers have no say over the figures.
