What to know about Georgia

Georgia does not charge sales tax on vehicles. Instead you pay a one-time Title Ad Valorem Tax of 7 percent every time the title changes hands, and that replaces the old annual birthday tax. Trade-in value only reduces the base if you buy from a dealer; in a private sale it does not, and the tax is calculated on the state assessment manual value rather than what you actually paid. New residents bringing a car in pay a reduced 3 percent.
